- Michter’s first launched Celebration Sour Mash in 2013, showcasing a blend of aged bourbon and rye that marked a bold direction for American whiskey.
- The 2026 edition blends seven barrels of bourbon and rye aged between 12 to over 30 years, bottled at 115.2 proof.
- With only 315 bottles available worldwide and priced at $6,000, this fifth edition is the last to feature exclusively pre-Shively whiskeys.
In 2011, bourbon began to regain prestige after years of being overlooked, while rye made a comeback from near extinction due to the cocktail renaissance of the 2000s. However, American whiskey was not yet regarded on the same level as single malt Scotch or Cognac, which commanded premium prices.
Enter Joe Magliocco, the visionary president of Michter’s. He engaged Willie Pratt, then the master distiller, with a challenge: could they create a bourbon and rye blend that could stand among the finest spirits globally? Pratt confidently responded, “Of course I can.” This collaboration resulted in Michter’s Celebration Sour Mash, launched in 2013 at a remarkable price of $4,000 for 273 intricately packaged bottles. It was a daring move that paid dividends, with Magliocco calling it “a watershed moment for American whiskey.”
Fast forward more than a decade, and despite a sales slump due to post-pandemic challenges and tariff issues, American whiskey has solidified its place as the leading category in high-end spirits. Rare bottles, old and new, now command prices that rival those of high-end Scotch and Cognac, with the 2013 Celebration fetching upwards of $20,000 in secondary markets.
Now, amid this dynamic landscape, Michter’s is unveiling its fifth edition of Celebration, the first since 2023. This blend comprises bourbons and ryes aged 12 to over 30 years, bottled above 110 proof but not necessarily at barrel strength. This release was crafted from seven barrels, selected with care by Michter’s expertise under the guidance of master distiller Dan McKee and master of maturation Andrea Wilson, landing at a proof of 115.2.
While the age and proof maintain some consistency, every Celebration release possesses unique character traits. Wilson notes, “Each release showcases a shift in flavors that develop complexity and depth, offering layers and unexpected nuances for a captivating drinking experience.” According to the brand’s tasting notes, this version features salted toffee, black cherry, dark chocolate ganache notes typical of older bourbons, leading to rye-influenced floral elements, alongside hints of citrus, tea, and baking spices.
Each iteration of Celebration has emerged approximately every three years. However, like the rest of Michter’s offerings, the quality of whiskey drives the timing rather than a set schedule. The development of each blend unfolds organically and “takes years to orchestrate,” McKee emphasizes.
“We continually taste barrels from our warehouses. At any moment, one may stand out as a potential candidate for Celebration, and we take note for future releases,” McKee explains. Add to that Wilson’s insights: “While developing a product like Celebration, we analyze extensive data to find whiskeys that share themes, unique traits, and specific profiles…. Aging whiskey contains not only scientific principles but also artistic elements.”

The oldest whiskeys in the Celebration blend span over 30 years, coinciding with the current era of Michter’s itself. The brand’s story dates back to 1753, originating in Pennsylvania; however, it fell dormant for years until Magliocco revived the trademark in the mid-1990s. He relocated it to Kentucky, initiating the sourcing of barrels for Michter’s bottles. Years later, they began producing their own whiskey at various distilleries. The youngest whiskeys in this Celebration release come from just before the opening of Michter’s Shively distillery. Significantly, this edition likely represents the last exclusively featuring pre-Shively whiskeys.
With each bottle of Celebration, consumers receive a stunning gift box along with a signed letter from McKee. This latest edition, priced at $6,000, stands as the highest priced Celebration yet. With only 315 bottles worldwide and a commendable history of value appreciation in the secondary market, it’s both a sought-after pour and a smart investment.
