A significant recall has been issued for Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene. According to a notification sent to select members, certain unopened bottles of this beloved product are at risk of breaking unexpectedly. This warning is especially critical as the bottles can shatter regardless of whether they are being handled. To minimize the risk of injury, Costco advises customers to securely cover each bottle in soft material, such as paper towels, place it in a sturdy plastic bag, and dispose of it in a larger garbage bag. Importantly, affected bottles should not be taken back to stores.
The recall affects states including Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Nebraska, Kentucky, North Dakota, Michigan, Missouri, and Minnesota. Consumers who purchased bottles with item number 1879870 between April 25 and April 26, 2025, are particularly urged to take action. Costco members can initiate a refund by bringing the recall letter they received to their local store. The Mystery Behind the Shattering Issue
Interestingly, Costco has faced various major recalls in the past involving food safety issues, from hepatitis A outbreaks to contamination incidents. However, with this recent Prosecco recall, there has been no report of injuries related to the defective bottles. Furthermore, the exact reasons for the bottles’ tendency to shatter have yet to be clarified.
Factors that can cause sparkling wine bottles like Prosecco to explode are primarily linked to temperature fluctuations, as well as improper corking and physical jostling. Additionally, ongoing fermentation within the bottle can lead to excessive internal pressure, which may result in breakage even when the bottle is stationary. Unfortunately, until Costco provides more insights, customers must treat this situation with caution and stay informed by maintaining communication with the store.
