    Studies have associated higher epicatechin intake with lower blood pressure and lipid levels.

    These antioxidants can enhance nitric oxide in the blood, which aids in improving blood flow, ultimately supporting brain function as well.

    Compounds in dark chocolate can enhance blood flow, potentially boosting focus and cognitive performance, adds Sharniquia White, RD.

    Furthermore, dark chocolate contains trace amounts of iron, magnesium, zinc, and selenium, all of which can bolster immune health.

    Additionally, it provides a reasonable amount of fiber—3 grams per ounce—which is beneficial for digestion.

    However, not all chocolate is created equally.

    Sarris cautions, “Processing methods—like alkalizing cocoa (commonly referred to as ‘Dutch-processed’), utilizing lower cocoa percentages, or incorporating long ingredient lists—can significantly decrease flavanol content, resulting in some chocolates having far less antioxidant benefit than expected.”

    Dark chocolate is quite calorie-dense due to cocoa butter, which is high in saturated fat.

    Higher cocoa percentages typically mean more cocoa butter and saturated fat.

    Additionally, many dark chocolate products contain added sugars, making moderation crucial.

    Antioxidants in Green Tea

    Green tea stands out among hot beverages, particularly in antioxidant content.

    Much like dark chocolate, it offers a rich source of polyphenols, according to Braddock.

    Around 50% of these polyphenols belong to the catechin family, including epicatechins, EGC, ECG, and EGCG.

    Catechins are potent antioxidants, with EGCG recognized as the most powerful.

    The antioxidants found in green tea are linked to numerous health benefits.

    Among these, green tea is often praised for its ability to boost metabolism.

    “Green tea may slightly enhance fat oxidation and energy expenditure,” explains White.

    Some studies indicate that green tea can benefit mental health as well.

    The presence of the amino acid L-theanine in green tea may help alleviate feelings of stress and anxiety, offering a sense of “calm focus,” says White.

    Regular consumption of green tea may boost heart health and longevity.

    “Those who drink green tea daily seem to have reduced cardiovascular mortality,” shares Braddock.

    However, she advises caution when interpreting studies, as many rely on concentrations or extracts not representative of typical consumption levels.

    Compared to dark chocolate, green tea is almost calorie-free, fat-free, and contains no added sugar while being hydrating.

    “When consumed plain, it provides antioxidants without the additional calories,” states Sarris.

    It’s worth noting that both dark chocolate and green tea contain caffeine, with green tea having significantly higher levels.

    Be mindful of when you consume it, especially if you’re sensitive to caffeine.

    Lastly, green tea might interact with certain medications, so it’s wise to check with a healthcare provider regarding potential interactions.

    If you’re still curious which one is superior, Sarris offers clarity: “Both foods have flavonoid antioxidants, yet they provide them in notably distinct ways.”

    On the other hand, dark chocolate can be a delightful way to consume antioxidants.

    “It’s a diverse source of cocoa flavanols; however, due to its calorie and sugar content, it’s best enjoyed as an occasional treat,” Sarris notes.

    Ultimately, there is no clear victor.

    Both dark chocolate and green tea can fit within a healthy, balanced diet.

    “The healthier option varies based on your wellness objectives, personal preferences, and overall diet,” White concludes.
